A native of Greensboro, NC, Stephen moved to Western North Carolina after attending the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy. Stephen and his wife are the owners of Owens Pharmacy in downtown Tryon.

Stephen is a member and past president of the Tryon Kiwanis Club. He is also the treasurer and past president of the Tryon Downtown Development Association (TDDA).

Steve and his wife have 5 children and live in Tryon.
